Census Bureau Canvassing Newark NeighborhoodsU.S. Census Bureau workers have begun canvassing Newark neighborhoods to verify addresses for the 2010 Census. The workers are walking and driving through neighborhoods between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The canvassing of all Newark neighborhoods should be complete by mid-June. The address canvassing operation is an important first step in assuring that every housing unit receives a census questionnaire in March 2010. U.S. Census workers can be identified by official badges, handheld computer devices and U.S. Census Bureau bags. The workers will use maps and global positioning system technology to update addresses. In situations where addresses are not clearly visible, census workers may ask a resident to verify a housing structure's address and whether there are additional living quarters on the property. Census workers canvassing neighborhoods are not permitted to enter homes or apartments. Census workers will never ask for bank or social security information. All census information collected, including addresses, are confidential and protected by law. Click here to view a fact sheet about the address canvassing.
